Of tags and life ;)

Ok, I don’t like getting tagged. But the trouble is when close friends tag and then follow up thru all forms of communication available, it needs to be done :) ;) !

I was tagged by Subbu and Puneet to mention 8 things about my prospective (?, mwahahahahah) life partner :o

So here goes nothing ! [insert evil grin]

1) There are days I can talk nonstop and there are days I would just prefer to keep quiet. I am rather extreme and hopefully she can handle that.

2) COOK FOOD. GOOD FOOD. NICE FOOD. TASTY FOOD. NICE FOOD. FOOD. FOOD. FOOD. I can’t emphasize it enough can i :p

3) The ability to understand each other in complete silence.

4) …

I am realizing this is a futile exercise because I want can be summarized in a sentence or two.

She who doesn’t judge me and lets me be, me.

The rest all is manageable ;)

Signed up!

Its been an interesting couple of weeks here. I am looking to re-organize my companies, run them differently, setup a team in place, work ;)   and ofcourse there is an endless stream of people who keep asking me if I am going to Wharton. I think its a compliment that someone today even asks me whether I would goto Wharton because I assumed that a lot of people would just assume that I would go!

Truth be said, at this point I would like to head out to W, but I dont know the situation I would be in over the next couple of months. So hoping for the best and preparing for the worst is the name of the game. Finally, we have started hiring at pagalguy.com and are looking at crazy a$$ed individuals who can fulfil our specific needs, which by the way are rather simple ;)

1) Sustain your salary
2) Find a place within the company where you can deliver

Its not fair, right! But for a venture like ours, we need entrepreneurs all the way – within the organization, running the organization and yes, supporting the organization ;) . When I get asked for job openings, I just ask people whether they can sustain their salary and at the barest minimum generate as much value for the company. I am usually greeted by a blank look, but I am glad its not always the same. A part of the reason we require such people is so that they can handle individual processes and divisions alone and its not just another 9-5 job! Will I find more folks like I have? I don’t know – but I dont intend to stop looking. Not until I can fill my company up with crazy entrepreneurial spirited folks who can take it to the next level :)

On another front, I’ll be speaking at IIT Kanpur as I’ve been invited to speak at the Megabucks event. That should be an interesting experience! :D

Commenting

I’d not allowed free commenting because I didn’t find a spam blocking or captcha tool that would work well for us. But now I have found a new service that allows for distributed spam filtering :p . www.akismet.com . Now to wait and watch how it works and yes, now you don’t need to register to comment on this blog :)

 Happy new year folks!! :)

Whartonite ? :P

This post comes from a guy with a 2nd class college degree, who came from a no-name college, average gmat, worked at not so well known companies, had no extracurriculars at college – but lived his life the way he knew best – flat out ;)

Look what he got a couple of days ago :D :D :D

Dreams, the stuff that makes the world go round! :)

Dream running!

Running/waddling/walking/crawling .. or intend to do so at the Stanchart Marathon. Will be doing this to support the cause of the physically challenged – www.naseoh.org , the NGO where I and a bunch of the PG gang teach every Sunday :) . Can I even do the dream run ? No I can’t. With zilch amount of preps and err.. with no intention to prep until the marathon .. I am sure its gonna be one helluva long walk. But who cares as long the as the loooooong walk is with friends! :D :D :D

Happy Waddling!

Moving!

Moving pangs. I’m shifting my residence after living in the same place in Mumbai for over 20 years! My schedules are all haywire, all thanks to the insane amounts of work needed to furnish the new residence. Wall colors, veneer prices, designs, lights, cable tv connections, bathroom design, colour of the fans, wirings for every plug point, height of the ceiling, concealed wiring, door designs, plywoods, laminate designs, wash basins, shower panels, speakers, picture lights, bed designs, chandelier style, color schemes, smoothening walls, cracked joints, door handles, hinges, telephone connections, transformers, 10 watt bulbs, crystal lights, spot lights, PL lights, jacuzzi, french windows, mosquito meshes, shoe rack, paintings, picture frames, marble designs, granite colors, foot light, wardrobes, drawers, handles, kitchen fittings, sinks, chimneys, mirrors, designer glass, tiles, window frames .. are just some of the things I’ve been working on a daily basis for the last couple of months. Its a challenge to build something from ground up and I can almost tell you what piece of hardware you can buy where in Mumbai !

Its been a challenge like none other! My family didn’t hire an interior designer for a simple reason. We wanted our ‘own home’. I realized that although I love looking and admiring abstract furniture designs and concepts, I dont necessarily feel comfortable being around em.

Um..now where do those ‘up lights’ go …. at what height do we want the door handles ….. how do I beautify the balcony… what.. ? did you say ’sleeper wood’?

As you can see I am seriously in a deranged and info overloaded mode. Handle with caution!

Randomitis

Since I have nothing interesting to add here in this blog anyway, let me play a game of tag. I was tagged by puneet – http://sdfn.blogspot.com/ . Now I gotta ramble about 20 random things about myself. So here you go :)

1) Started driving cars at the age of 6 .. used to sit on my fathers lap and drive em .. at 7 I could drive alone ;)
2) Biking started at 9 – learnt it all alone by hijacking my fathers bike when he wasn’t home. Yes, my feet wouldn’t reach the ground and I would have to balance until I reached any ledge where I could balance one of my foot to stop the bike
3) Was forced to sign a statement at school stating that I would leave school if I created any more nuisance than I already did ;)
4) Extremely clumsy and have to dash into every piece of furniture in the house even if all I do is get up and sit down in the same place.
5) If I get addicted to an idea/possibility, I can’t sleep. Have not slept many a nights due to this
6) Ex voracious reader right thru college. Went through approx 2K books and exhausted my local library before 12th grade. Now haven’t read a book in a couple of years :(
7) Played cricket for my school – stopped watching matches ages ago
8) Wanted to play the drums – someday I will. Once I have a big office and stuff.. I intend to take classes at work after the employees leave ;)
9) Been a computer freak since childhood. The first computer bought was a Sinclair Z-80
10) Always been a stickler for privacy. I respect others’ privacy and expect the same and luckily i’ve found that the best of my friends think the same :)
11) The first time I earned money was when I and my friend bet Rs.1o on a cricket match we and the neighbourhood kids played. We won.
12) Had only 1 friend through college.
13) The worst thing about running pagalguy.com is dealing with business school students
14) Never been to a pub, never had a sip of beer, never smoked a cigarette. I guess I have bigger addictions and life is one of them ;)
15) Failure doesn’t mean squat and is just success delayed. My astute belief.
16) I want the time to write and inspire. Someone out there might find something useful from my life experimentations.
17) Fav. dessert is the caramel pudding my mom makes. NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING I’ve eaten across half a dozen countries comes close.
18) My fav line to my mom – “Mera kya hoga” for which I get the response ” Tera kuch bhi nahi hoga” :P
19) Games. PC Games. Will play em now..and will build entire gaming rooms sometime later in life ;)
20) For 1.5 years, I didn’t tell my parents I founded and ran pagalguy.com . Now they can’t gush enough [grin]

And no, I aint tagging no one. People deserve peace ~

Woo meeeeee

I get to speak about my experiences as an entrepreneur at IIM Indore’s fest – IIMI – IRIS. Last year I was applying to the IIMs to study and this year I am speaking there. Thoroughly humbled by fate, me.

Do the numbers ad up ?

Going through a rather interesting situation at pagalguy.com . We’ve been tracking our traffic levels and over the last one month we’ve seen skyrocketing growth. We are serving close to 325,000 pages a day and the forum ends up serving over 150,000 pages on a business day. Assuming we have 6 ad spots, that makes a total of 900,000 – 1,000,000 (yes, close to a million ads a day)!

Ok, this is the possibility, next question is do we have the ability to fulfil that kind of inventory? When we’re looking at fulfilling approximately 3 crore impressions a month, I am realizing that it is extremely tough to get that many advertisers on board to ensure that the inventories are taken care of.

From what I sense, once the bottleneck has been identified, the problem area can be fixed. But here, I think I have become the bottleneck ;)

May be its time to hire a dedicated crew to market the website, but I am not too fond of that idea because I’d rather focus on what we do best. Develop new features and build better communities. Anyone here who can guide me to somebody who has a much better idea on media selling than I do ? :)
