Online Communities - The future?

This post has its roots into various discussions I’ve had with people over a long time. A few years ago, I wasn’t a fan of online communities, but I think I’ve changed my perspective a few dozen times since then. One thing I realize is that there is a darn good chance that you will see more communitites sprouting up. Why are they the future ? Or why should they play an important rule in the future of the internet/websites? It has to do with how communities in real life have evolved. Many of us talk about the times getting a shopping recommendation for buying a refridgerator or a television would entail catching hold of your near and dear neighbours, cousins and other family members. This aspect of social life is degenerating extremely fast and with nuclear families coming up .. people just don’t have a place to get even simple shopping recommendations!

Here enter the online forums/bulletin boards - you get recommendations , insights, perspectives and discussion from people. Free. All while sitting at your desktop. No, online communities won’t displace your real life social behaviour, but the above also explains, why online communities , each , have their own character, style and personna. Why do communities thrive and goods review sites don’t ? Perspective. A goods review website can give you on point of view - their point of view. Enter a community and you get to hear from everyone and more .. If you ask me , well classified, well maintained and easy to use online communities can affect change in ways unimagined and that is what we experiment with at pagalguy.com .

Any more ideas? thoughts ? What makes it work? What won’t ? I’d rather maintain a conversation on my blog where I get to learn from different perspectives than rather talk about whatever insane stuff I can think up off
